Update on Joey’s upcoming procedure

An update on Joey and his latest planned tests: X-rays on Wednesday show “He is completely impacted through most of his intestines,” Katie said. That explains why he has so much pain trying to get any of it out.

“They feel it’s necessary to bring in a surgeon, cardiac anesthesia, the GI doc and to consult pulmonary/radiology just for the damn procedure,” Katie said. That could cause the procedures to be delayed until Friday.

A major concern for Katie and Steve is that Joey might have Hirshprung’s disease. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “In Hirschsprung’s disease, the nerves are missing from a part of the bowel. Areas without such nerves cannot push material through. This causes a blockage. Intestinal contents build up behind the blockage, causing the bowel and abdomen to become swollen.”

About Gary Morton

The birth of Gary Morton's first grandson, Joey, introduced his family to the world of persons with special needs. Joey has Down syndrome, along with a heart defect often associated with that condition. Morton had originally planned a general interest blog but quickly decided to use it to follow his grandson's successes and setbacks, and to explore Joey's World.

  1. Now I will be focused on hoping, praying that it is not Hirshprung’s disease. Hopefully it was just something such as the anesthetic from his last operation that has temporarily backed things up and hasn’t gotten straightened out yet. I’m really happy that Katie is a mama who “knows” when something is not right with her son; good call on getting him to the hospital.

    • Linda, Katie also is upset. They’ve been telling docs and medical staff about Joey’s labored bowel movements but usually it was dismissed as probably this or that. While she is now relieved the doctors are now strongly investigating what is wrong, she is angered that it took them so long to listen.
